Mercado Modelo

By suzana bresolin - Posted on 14 March 2009

TheMercado Modelo - market model - was built in 1861. Initially designed as customs building, with a roundabout to the bottom where the landing ships to unload. After the fire of 1984 was reformed. Currently works as a market for handicrafts, receiving thousands of visitors daily, as some illustrious as Queen Elizabeth of England.

The basement was recently discovered after a fire that destuiu much of the building. Area is quite wet and muffled, was used for the storage of goods to its marketing, especially of slaves from Africa, causing the death of many. Currently, the space is open to visitors and used for art exhibitions.

TheMercado Modelo market I have visited a number of occasions and purchased two handcrafted Baiana figurines and have accidently broken one of them. I was wondering if anyone knows where i can purchase one from without travelling back to this wonderful city. If their is a market seller that is willing to package and send one through a courier??
